A Time for Rage, A Time for War

The War Series: Book 5

In the summer of 1962, the glow of America’s promise shined ever brighter with a young new president in the White House and the thrill of John Glenn’s recent orbit around the earth. A renewed spirit of hope and expectation surged across the country as we set our sights on the moon.

But storm clouds began to gather as rumors of a war in Vietnam crept into the nightly news. Closer to home, the civil rights movement gained fresh momen-tum under the non-violent leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Still, the sharp divide between the races grew increasingly heated as the decade rolled on.

Back in Chicago, the wedding of Jacob Versteeg and Abby Greene delighted the hearts of family and friends who gathered to celebrate the young couple. But all too soon, the McClains faced the frightening reality of war when their son Frankie enlisted and was deployed to Southeast Asia.

As the nation raged in the streets and its young men fell on distant battlefields, Danny and Anya McClain and their entire family find their faith in God tested as never before.

In the fifth and final book in her War Series, Amazon Bestselling author Diane Moody concludes the legacy of the McClains and Versteegs first introduced in Of Windmills & War.

A special note from the author

Early in 2024, I knew the time had come to wrap up my War Series and let the McClains and Versteegs live the rest of their lives without you and I incessantly peeking over their shoulders. What began as a labor of love in sharing some of my father’s World War II experiences (highly fictionalized in Of Windmills & War) has expanded far beyond my original intentions.

After the fourth book in this series, as my characters turned a page in their calendars to the turbulent '60s, I had my own epiphany. As a bona fide baby boomer, that was the decade I first became aware of the complex world around me and the daily challenges our country faced both at home and abroad.

The civil rights movement. The hippie movement. The counterculture. The assassinations of JFK, MLK, and Bobby Kennedy. The women’s movement. Man walked on the moon. The war in Vietnam and the anti-war movement back home. Turbulent times indeed. And through them all, I can still hear the unique and familiar cadence of Walter Cronkite’s voice as he shared the news with us every weeknight; his reassuring presence in those troubled times.

I must confess my reticence to write about the Vietnam War, which is why this book is by no means a comprehensive history of that 19-year conflict. Like many of you, every memory I have of that war is negative. As the daughter of a proud WWII veteran and someone who has always respected those serving in the military, I found myself conflicted. Gradually, I learned to separate those responsible for orchestrating America’s failed involvement in Vietnam from the brave patriots who answered the call to serve their country.

I suppose I will never comprehend why nations cannot solve their differences in more diplomatic ways. In the 21st century, it’s unconscionable to realize we still think conflicts are best decided by whoever conquers the most land and kills the most people. Apparently, we’ve learned nothing from history.

If you’ve read any of my books, you know that faith plays an important role in the stories I write. I believe with all my heart that our only hope for America lies in the saving grace and mercy found only in Jesus Christ. The deep divide in which we now live can never be solved by political parties or through ideologies. As President Ronald Reagan once said, “If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under.”

Let us put our trust in God and pray for the soul of our nation before it’s too late.
